Do not download them if they are .exe files; just download the .zip file or .rar file and (assuming there's not a .exe file inside) install them.
Those sites are generally safe, but when downloading anything, utilize a virus scanner. Also, if you are downloading an actual game mod (as opposed to hair, clothes, etc.), you MUST remove the mod every time you patch your game.
